Coming
into South Manhattan on the Staten Island Ferry. Poignantly,
the last time I made this trip was in the first week of September,
2001. Looking out to the far right of the red post, the site
of the Twin Towers, who knew that such an immense space could
be so utterly infused with anguish and heartbreak? So it was
with a sombre outlook and reflective mind that last year I gazed
again on the same scene, but this time to a world changed forvever.
How could these European tourists be so full of laughter and
bonhomie? Yet the hallmark of a great city is its ability to
regenerate in the face of devastating adversity. New people
arriving with laughter and good cheer to her shores add to that
healing, and to the sense of life renewing, as it will always
do. At least thats what I tell myself. |
